Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink Diamond of 6.89 Carats
Lately it seems the world can’t get enough of pink diamonds. In the latest in a series of global auction records for colored diamonds, a modified rectangular-cut fancy vivid purple-pink diamond of 6.89 carats was sold for $6.91 million at Christie’s New York Jewels auction on Tuesday, December 7.
The anonymous buyer paid $1 million per carat for the cut-cornered modified rectangular-cut fancy vivid purple-pink diamond set in a ring made of 18K rose gold, making this pink heart join the band of the most expensive diamond auctioned this season. However the most expensive sale of a diamond is still held by a 24.78 carat diamond sold by Sotheby’s for $46.2 million in November, closely followed by another pink diamond sold by Christie’s for a record-breaking $23.1 million some time ago.
The auction total, $22.1 million, brought Christie’s New York jewelry sales total to $131 million for the year the highest total ever for the U.S. jewelry auction market.
